about

A shanty for the town of Dartmouth, UK.

In 1592, the Portuguese treasure ship Madre de Deus was caputed by the English Navy and taken to Dartmouth. The ship was the richest prize ever captured by English privateers during the reign of Elizabeth I.

Wasting little time, the good people of Dartmouth proceeded to plunder the warship as it lay off shore. They managed to make off with around two-thirds of it's cargo before Sir Walter Raleigh, hastily dispatched by Elizabeth, was able to restore order.

This shanty pays tribute to those plunderers.

lyrics

Tell me lads, can you hear the sounds?
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
The Mother of God, she’s come to town
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

Her belly groans with foreign gold
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
And her gilded decks sing out for for home
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

Casting off with the rising tide
It’s the down the Dart and up the side
Of Heaven come to England's shores
With blackened sails and muffled oars
We’ll meet the Mother of God!

I heard the tale down in the Seven Stars
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
Where navy lads tips back a jar
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

And i heard it too down on the old Fosse street
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
Where the docker boys hang thick as thieves
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

Casting off with the rising tide
It’s the down the Dart and up the side
Of Heaven come to England's shores
With blackened sails and muffled oars
We’ll meet the Mother of God!

The taxman wants what the taxman sees
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
But Lizzie she'll get one in three
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

Sir Walter wants to strip your back
(The rain does fall and the wind does blow)
But In Dartmouth boys he’s met his match!
(It’s down the Dart we’ll go)

Casting off with the rising tide
It’s the down the Dart and up the side
Of Heaven come to England's shores
With blackened sails and muffled oars
We’ll meet the Mother of God!
